1.1 Famous Buddhist Mountain
Mount Emei is one of the four famous Buddhist mountains in China, renowned both at home and abroad as a "Holy Land of Buddhism" and the "Rite of Samantabhada". In the middle of the 1st century AD, Buddhism was introduced to Mount Emei from India via the Southern Silk Road. Pu Gong, a herbalist, founded the Puguang Hall at the present Golden Summit. In the 3rd century AD, the belief in Samantabhadra Bodhisattva spread in the mountain. Hui Chi, a Chinese monk, built the Samantabhadra Temple at the foot of Guanxin Slope, and since then it has become the Rite of Samantabhada. There are currently more than 30 temples within the Mount Emei Scenic Area. The eight famous temples among them are: Baoguo Temple (报国寺), Fuhu Temple (伏虎寺), Qingyin Pavilion (清音阁), Wannian Temple (万年寺), Hongchunping (洪椿坪), Xianfeng Temple (仙峰寺), Xixiangchi (洗象池) and Huazang Temple (华藏寺). These temples are inlaid on Mount Emei like shining jewels, showing people the profound Buddhist historical and cultural settings.
1.2 The Kingdom of Animals and Plants
Mount Emei is evergreen throughout the year and the average temperature difference between the mountain top and the mountain foot is 14℃. It is known as "Four seasons on one mountain, and different weather every ten li (3.11 miles)". Coupled with low clouds, abundant fog and heavy rainfall, it is not just a kingdom of rare flowers and herbs but also a paradise for rare birds and animals. Mount Emei has more than 5,000 species of plants, which is equivalent to the total number of plants in Europe. Among them, Alsophila spinulosa and Davidia involucrata are national first-class protected plants, and another 103 plants are named with "Emei" as the prefix. What's more, Mount Emei is home to more than 2,300 species of wild animals, and there are 29 species of animals which are among the first batch of national protected animals, such as the Tibetan macaque, the oakleaf butterfly, the Emei mustache toad, the black stork, the music frog, the red panda, the silver pheasant etc.
1.3 Emei Martial Arts
Emei martial arts, together with Shaolin martial arts and Wudang martial arts, are listed as the three major styles of Chinese martial arts. Among them, Emei martial arts enjoys a history of 2,500 years and is the martial arts with the longest history and the earliest establishment. Emei martial arts got its name from Mount Emei, originated in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, and thrived during the more than 500 years between the Tang and Song dynasties. During the peak tourist season, holidays and large-scale festival activities, Emei Mountain Martial Arts Association often holds martial arts performance activities at the Tianxia Ming Shan Square (天下名山广场), Baoguo Temple (报国寺) and Huazang Temple(华藏寺).

1.4 Cultural Activities
Offering Ten Thousand Bright Lamps to Samantabhadra Bodhisattva
A respected senior monk presides over the altar for the grand Buddhist event regularly, chanting the Incense Praise, reciting the Buddha's verse, lighting the lamps, and making the dedication, etc. Also, visitors can spot the grand event such as Buddha-worshiping ceremonies as well as large-scale Water and Land Dharma Assemblies during the period of the 1st and 15th day in each lunar month and the Buddha's birthday.

The Pilgrimage Festival
Every year, the Pilgrimage Festival of Mount Emei mainly focuses on the pilgrimage to the mountain about worshiping Buddha. Eminent monks from home and abroad are invited to hold a series of Dharma assemblies, temple fairs, consecration ceremonies and pilgrimage activities to pray for blessings, these activities last for seven days each May. In addition, there is a famous mountain pilgrimage festival on Lao'e Mountain, known as the "Mountain Pilgrimage Festival on the Sixth Day of the Sixth Lunar Month". This mountain pilgrimage festival originated in the Sui Dynasty and flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is a comprehensive folk activity that integrates mountain pilgrimage and prayer for blessings, cultural performances, and exchanges of folk culture and art, with a history of more than 1,600 years. The main activities of the mountain pilgrimage festival is composed of drum performances in prosperous times, dragon and tiger dances, the Monkey King paying homage to the birthday star, Hanfu performances, etc., which have attracted a large number of tourists to participate. In 2023, the Mountain Pilgrimage Festival on the Sixth Day of the Sixth Lunar Month of Lao'e Mountain was included in the intangible cultural heritage list of Sichuan Province, thus it is of great value.

2. What to Do and See in Mount Emei
2.1 The Golden Summit 金顶
As a symbol of Mount Emei, the Golden Summit, at an altitude of 3,077 meters, is an excellent place to appreciate the sunrise, sea of clouds, and Buddha's light.
Sunrise: At the Golden Summit of Mount Emei, which is 3,077 meters above sea level, when you climb to a high place and look into the distance, the sunrise scene is even more magnificent, the sky before dawn is very wonderful, a thin line of light appears on the horizon with wisps of red clouds floating up, holding two or three colorful clouds with golden edges, all of which mean that a glorious day is about to arrive. Actually, the best time to watch the sunrise is at 6:00 am in the summer and 7:00 am in the winter.
Sea of Clouds: Mount Emei is an area with a high altitude, and the mountains are so tall that they seem to reach into the clouds. The misty and lingering clouds around the mountainside can be seen throughout the year. Standing on the Golden Summit and looking out, it is extremely spectacular. Many people go to Mount Emei just to have a glimpse of the wonderful sight of the sea of clouds there. The best time to enjoy it is from 9:00 to 10:00 in the morning and from 3:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon.
Buddha's Light: When tourists stand on the Golden Summit of Mount Emei with their backs to the sun, and there is a thick layer of clouds and mist below, they will see a colorful halo with a red outer ring and a purple inner ring on the sky. The figure of the viewer appears in the middle, and the shadow moves with the person. When the person leaves, the halo disappears, so this is the magical "Buddha's Light" phenomenon of Mount Emei. The best time to watch it is from 9:00 to 10:00 in the morning and from 3:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon.
It should be noted that if visitors want to see the sea of clouds and the sunrise at the Golden Summit, they must stay overnight at Leidongping (雷洞坪) or the Golden Summit and the two-day itinerary can be planned as follows:
Day 1: Start the journey in the morning, after visiting Baoguo Temple (报国寺) and Fuhu Temple (伏虎寺) at the foot of the mountain, take a bus from the Baoguo Temple Tourist Passenger Transport Center to Wuxiangang Station (五显岗车站). Then continue to visit Qingyin Pavilion (清音阁), Yixiantian (a narrow strip of sky) and the Ecological Monkey Area. Before the last bus departs, take a bus to Leidongping and stay there for the night, waiting to watch the sunrise in the next morning.
Day 2: In the early morning, you can go from Leidongping (雷洞坪) and take the Golden Summit Cable Car to the Golden Summit. After enjoying the sunrise, you can directly choose to go down the mountain, or take a bus to Wannian Temple Station(万年寺车站), then take the Wannian Cableway to reach Wannian Temple or visit the nearby temples, and then take the cable car back to Wannian Temple Station. Finally, you can take a bus down the mountain from Wannian Temple Station to end the trip.

2.1.1 Samantabhadra Pagoda 普贤塔
As one of the important Buddhist buildings, the Samantabhadra Pagoda is located at the Golden Summit of Mount Emei. Inside the pagoda, there are statues of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva and other Buddhist sacred objects enshrined. The statue of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is at the center of the Golden Summit, it sits upright on a pedestal with an elephant and a lotus seat, and clouds and mists are floating around in all directions. When the rays of the rising sun shine on the treasure top of the Buddha statue, countless auspicious lights and auras are reflected from the golden Buddha statue, thus inlaying the sea of clouds with a magnificent golden edge, and the scene is extremely spectacular.

2.2 Wanfo Peak 万佛顶
Wanfo Peak is the highest peak of Mount Emei, with an altitude of 3,099 meters. It is also the site with the highest elevation and the best natural ecological protection area among the four famous Buddhist mountains in China. The viewing platform of Wanfo Peak is the best place to admire the spectacular scenery of Mount Emei. Tourists can enjoy the sea of clouds and the Buddha's light here. In addition, there are also scenic spots such as Wanfo Pavilion, the alpine rhododendron forest, Black Bear Gully, and the Immortals' Turning Back, which are well worth a visit.

2.3 Baoguo Temple 报国寺
The Holy Land for Praying for Blessings - Baoguo Temple, is situated at the foot of Mount Emei. It serves as the gateway and the starting point for visiting Mount Emei. Regarded as the huge temple on Mount Emei, it is also the location of the Buddhist Association and the center of Buddhist activities. The buildings in the temple are simple and elegant, surrounded by lush green forests. Above the mountain gate, there are three big characters "Baoguo Temple" written by Emperor Kangxi. You can also spot the "Evening Bell of Shengji" (圣积晚钟), which is the only cultural landscape in the mountain. Apart from this, the Mount Emei Cultural Relics Administration Office is also set up in the temple, collecting various ceramics, jades, documents, calligraphy and paintings, metal utensils, as well as weapons and tools unearthed from the Warring States Period. Although the temple sits at the foot of the scenic area where there are a large number of tourists, the incense in the temple is very prosperous, which is worth visiting, the entrance ticket is 8 yuan per person.

2.4 Fuhu Temple 伏虎寺
Fuhu Temple is located one kilometre west of Baoguo Temple, it was first built in the Tang Dynasty and the treasure of the temple is a Huayan Pagoda made of purple copper in the Ming Dynasty. The pagoda is 5.8 meters high and has 14 floors, more than 4,700 small Buddha statues are cast on the body of the pagoda.

2.5 Wannian Temple 万年寺
Considered as one of the temples with the longest history in Mount Emei, Wannian Temple, it was first built in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, there are numerous precious Buddhist scriptures written on palm leaves and the tooth relic of the Buddha enshrined in the temple.

2.6 Qingyin Pavilion 清音阁
Qingyin Pavilion stands at the foot of Niuxinling (牛心岭), 710 meters above sea level. It is one of the eight famous temples in Mount Emei. To the left, it leads to Hongchunping (洪椿坪) and Xianfeng Temple (仙峰寺), and to the right, it reaches Bailong Cave (白龙洞) and Wannian Temple (万年寺). It is a must-pass place for those who go up the mountain to pay homage and go sightseeing. Qingyin Pavilion has only one hall, and there is the "Jiewang Pavilion"(接王亭) in front of it. Although Qingyin Pavilion is small, its location is strategically important. Standing high above and looking down, it displays the spectacular landscape. Surrounded by mountains and waters, the scenery here is extremely breathtaking, thus it is an icon building of Buddhist temple gardens in China and is home to one of the Ten Sceneries of Mount Emei, namely "The Clear Sounds of the Twin Bridges".

2.7 Yixiantian (A Narrow Strip of Sky) 一线天
Yixiantian (A Narrow Strip of Sky), located one kilometre west of Qingyin Pavilion, is a natural spring canyon. When you enter the canyon and look up, you will see steep and precipitous cliffs on both sides. There is a narrow gap between the two peaks that only allows one person to pass through. Looking up, you can only spot a thin strip of blue sky, which is truly breathtaking. Along the way, there are grotesque rocks, and the waterfalls in the mountain streams roar, giving people a strong sense of winding paths leading to secluded and tranquil places.
2.8 Ecological Monkey Area 生态猴区
The Ecological Monkey Area of Mount Emei lies near "Yixiantian (A Narrow Strip of Sky)". It is currently the largest natural wild monkey area in China. Travelers can take the shuttle bus at the tourist center or at Leidongping (雷洞坪) and then get off at Wannian Temple, finally reach the area on foot. There are plank roads, pavilions and suspension bridges set up in the monkey area to facilitate tourists to observe the monkeys. However, it should be noted that the monkeys on Mount Emei are not afraid of tourists at all. Therefore, be careful with the monkeys and food must be put in the bag and should not be exposed outside or held in the hand. Remember not to tease the monkeys, otherwise they will come to snatch the food!

2.9 Spring Resort 温泉度假区
There are many hotels at the foot of Mount Emei where tourists can soak in hot springs. After coming down from Mount Emei, taking a hot spring bath can wash away all the tiredness in the whole day and recharge the battery, here is the recommended hot spring resort.
Lingxiu Hot Spring (灵秀温泉): It sits near Baoguo Temple (报国寺) and is the largest radon hot spring resort in the western region. The water quality is very clear and rich in a variety of minerals, which has a good curative effect on diseases such as skin diseases and arthritis. There are five layers of cascading green hot springs in the hot spring area, including a traditional Chinese medicine pool, a massage bath, a concubine's fruit bath and many other types of hot spring pools. In addition, Lingxiu Hot Spring also provides leisure facilities such as SPA and massage, allowing tourists to enjoy a full-body relaxation while soaking in the hot springs. 2.10 Ski Resort 滑雪场
The Ski Resort of Mount Emei, nestled on the right - hand side of the road leading to the Leidongping Parking Lot (雷洞坪停车场), stands at an elevation of approximately 2,500 meters. Here, skiing enthusiasts can hit the slopes from November of the previous year all the way through to the end of March of the following year. Endowed with distinctive climatic conditions and a terrain that is both gentle and expansively open, this location offers unrivaled natural advantages for skiing.
The supporting facilities within the scenic area are highly developed. The alpine ski trails cater to more experienced skiers seeking a thrilling challenge, while the beginner's ski trails are designed to accommodate those taking their first steps on skis. Additionally, there are dedicated snow - play areas, such as snow - fighting zones, where tourists can engage in lighthearted snow - related fun.
From December each year to February of the subsequent year, Mount Emei transforms into a winter wonderland during its snow season. During this time, the local authorities organize the grand Ice, Snow and Hot Spring Festival in the mountain. This not only unlocks access to more scenic areas for exploration but also presents tourists with a wider array of recreational activities to enjoy.
The skiing charge in Mount Emei is set at 100 yuan per person per hour. The operating hours are from 09:00 to 17:00 (from December each year to the end of February of the following year, with the prime skiing period spanning from November to March of the next year).

External traffic information
By Air
The nearest airport to the Mount Emei Scenic Area is Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (成都双流机场), which is only 120 kilometers away. In addition, there are flights from Mianyang Airport(绵阳机场) and Chongqing Airport(重庆机场) that arrive at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport.
By Train
Take the high-speed rail from Chengdu East Railway Station to Mount Emei Railway Station, it takes about 1 hour. After arriving at Mount Emei Railway Station, you can take Bus No. 12 to the Mount Emei Tourist Passenger Transport Center.
By Bus
Departing from Chengdu
There are direct buses to Mount Emei at Chengdu Xin Nanmen Bus Station (成都新南门汽车站). Buses depart every half an hour, and the journey takes 2 hours and the ticket price is approximately 47 yuan.
Departing from Leshan
There are direct buses to Mount Emei at Leshan Central Bus Station (乐山中心站) and Xiaoba Bus Station(肖坝车站). Buses at Leshan Central Bus Station depart every 10 minutes, the journey takes about 30 minutes and the ticket price is 8 yuan. In addition, there are shuttle buses between the Mount Emei Scenic Area and the Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area. Buses depart every hour, and the ticket price is 10 yuan.
Departing from Chongqing
There are direct buses to Mount Emei at Chongqing Caiyuanba Bus Station (重庆菜园坝汽车站). The departure times to Mount Emei Passenger Transport Center are 7:10, 9:00, and 11:30 with the ticket price 138 yuan.
By Ship
Emeishan City is not directly accessible by water transport, but it is only 30 kilometers away from Leshan City, which has water transport connections (Leshan is located at the confluence of the Min River and the Dadu River, and there are passenger ships to Yibin, Luzhou, and Chongqing). You can first take a passenger ship to Leshan City and then transfer to a vehicle to Emeishan City.
Internal traffic information
By Train
At present, the high-speed railway station of Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport has been opened, you can take the bullet train directly to Emeishan Station (峨眉山站). After getting off the train, it is within a 10-minutes' walk to the scenic area.
By Bus
Buses at Mount Emei city: You can take Bus No. 1 or Bus No. 7 to Huangwan Station (黄湾车站), and then transfer Bus No. 5 to Fuhu Temple (伏虎寺). Among them, Bus No. 7 and Bus No. 5 pass through the Baoguo Temple Tourist Passenger Transport Center (报国寺旅游客运中心).
Buses at Mount Emei High-speed Rail Station: You can take Bus No. 12 to Fuhu Temple (passing through the Baoguo Temple Tourist Passenger Transport Center).
By Taxi
The starting price of a taxi is 5 yuan in Emeishan urban area, one may take the taxi from Jiuzhu Passenger Terminal(九珠客运中心) to passenger transport center of the scenic area and it is approximately 8 kilometres, 15 minutes ' driving. In addition, taxis can only reach the Welcome Square within the Mount Emei Scenic Area, and tourists need to transfer to a tourist sightseeing bus to enter the mountain.
By Cableway
Wannian Cableway (from Wannian Parking Lot to Wannian Temple)
Fees: In the peak season (January 16 - December 14), the upward journey is 65 yuan and the downward journey is 45 yuan; in the off-season (December 15 - January 15 of the following year), the upward journey is 30 yuan and the downward journey is 20 yuan. Operating hours: 6:40 - 18:00.

4. Best Time to Visit
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most suitable seasons for travelling in Mount Emei, it is with moderate climate and enchanting scenery at this period.
When visiting Mount Emei in spring (April), it is exactly the time when azaleas are in full bloom all over the mountain, and you can see a sea of colorful azaleas. Besides enjoying the flowers, you can also participate in the Pilgrimage Festival of Mount Emei (which lasts for a month between March and April) and admire the grand occasion of ten thousand bright lamps being offered to Samantabhadra Bodhisattva.
In autumn, Mount Emei is full of magnificent and stunning views. The brilliant red leaves all over the mountain are the symbol of its autumn scenery. From the middle of September to the end of October every year, the leaves on the mountain turn from green to yellow and finally become red. Leshan Giant Buddha 乐山大佛
Leshan Giant Buddha is situated beside Lingyun Temple of Lingyun Mountain in Leshan City, Sichuan Province. It is adjacent to the confluence of the Dadu River, Qingyi River and Min River. It is one of the largest stone seated Buddha statues in the world, with a total height of 71 meters. Among them, the head is 14.7 meters high and 10 meters wide with 1,051 hair coils, and the ears are 7 meters long. It was carved on the basis of the terrain of the mountain, showing great momentum and thus having extremely high historical and artistic value.

Food
Emei Douhua 峨眉豆花
Emei Douhua is famous because of the excellent water. The Douhua made with the water from Mount Emei is as white as jade and has a tender and soft texture. When a bowl of tender, light and wavy Douhua is served, it doesn't need anything complicated, just simply served with a plate of dipping sauce. The fresh fragrance of Douhua blends with the spicy dipping sauce, and the two flavors mix on the taste buds, making you want more after one bowl.
Emei Vegetarian Dishes 峨眉素菜
Since this is a holy land of Buddhism and Taoism, Emei vegetarian dishes gain much popularity. The raw materials for vegetarian dishes include tofu and its products processed from soybeans, as well as sheet jelly and vermicelli. Chaoshou 抄手

Golden Summit (金顶)
Accommodation on the Golden Summit is relatively expensive. The lowest price starts from over 300 yuan per room, and it usually comes with a shared restroom. This is the regular price, and it will be even higher during holidays and peak seasons. So, it is essential to make a reservation in advance. However, if the weather is nice, it is still recommended to stay on the Golden Summit, as you can enjoy the sea of clouds during the day, watch the sunset in the evening, and admire the starry sky at night. Although it is very cold on Mount Emei at night, the starry sky is truly stunning.
Leidongping (雷洞坪)
The accommodation in Leidongping is quite cheap, around 100 yuan per room (most of them are homestays, and you must bargain), but it is not very convenient to watch the sunrise. Nevertheless, you can choose to take the earliest cable car to the Golden Summit in the morning to watch the sunrise, and it is still feasible.

Weather
The Scenic Area in Mount Emei presents different climatic characteristics depending on the altitude. The temperature at the Golden Summit is about 14 degrees Celsius lower than that at the foot of the mountain. Even in spring and summer, the average temperature at the Golden Summit is only around 8 to 10 degrees. Therefore, when visiting the Golden Summit, you need to prepare a thick cotton coat! There are shops renting clothes from Leidongping to the Golden Summit, so visitors can make their own choices.
Monkey Groups
There are many monkey groups on the way from Leidongping to Jieyin Hall, people should pay attention to their own safety during the process of watching them. Try not to carry plastic bags, and it is better to carry your backpack in front of your chest. The temperature difference at different altitudes in the Mount Emei Scenic Area is quite large. Generally, it varies between the top of the mountain and the foot of the mountain. Below 2,000 meters, Mount Emei, like most areas in China, has four distinct seasons. Although the temperature in the middle mountain area is slightly lower, the heat generated by climbing the mountain will not make you feel cold. Above 2,000 meters in the high mountain area, there are only spring and winter. In summer, the average temperature at the Golden Summit is only 8-10°C, so you need a coat suitable for spring or autumn. If you want to watch the sunrise, you need even thicker clothes. In winter, the temperature here can drop to as low as -20°C, so you must wear clothes (coats are available for rent at the top of the mountain).

Consumption Level
The cost of visiting Mount Emei is not particularly high.
